The idea to start RealOpal took root about ten years ago... in Los Angeles of all places! A kind jewelry-store owner was offering some beautiful opal-mosaic pendants at his store, and their color (like most real opal) was simply irresistable! After purchasing one of these pendants, I decided to investigate other locations where people could purchase more quality opal jewelry, at reasonable prices. I was really surprised to discover that stores selling quality Australian opal at reasonable prices were practically non-existent in southern California!

I asked friends throughout the U.S.A. to look in their areas also, but the results were similar. Even all of the jewelry-sections of the massive department store chains I visited only sold "imitation" opal that had been created in a lab... and that type of "synthetic opal" pales in comparison to "natural, real opal." Not only were the brilliant colors of real, vibrantly-colored Australian opal difficult to find among retailers, but on the rare occasion when I did find "quality opal" products... the prices were quite high. And so... RealOpal.com was born from this search for "affordable, quality opal jewelry."
